Most recently they have gained additional international fame with Salma Hayek’s wonderful portrayal of Frida Kahlo in the movie FRIDA whose signature outfit included the remarkable huipils of Tehauntepec. The Tehauna huipils include four different types of embroidery which are hand done and known as “abordar.” In addition, there is also embroidery including geometric work which is hand done on a machine known as “costura.” The third type of work is hand done with a tool similar to a crochet hook or possibly a hand-held machine which is called “gaucho.” These different elements contribute to the unique and unquestionable beauty of the Tehauna huipil. The Gala of Fiesta huipil is one of the most beautiful in Mexico and is embroidered on velvet. The gala huipil is traditionally worn with a floor length embroidered skirt and has a fringe of lace. It is worn for major festivals, weddings, and official events. The day-to-day dress of the Tehauna woman reflects the hot and humid climate of the region. The huipil is short and made from light cotton often with flower patterns. The huipil is worn with a long skirt of cotton or synthetic material with either a plain or flower pattern. Women of other more moderate climates wear the embroidered velvet huipil in combination with a colorful cotton skirt. Culturally the Zapotec women of Tehauntepec are known for their strong character. This area is one of the few in Meso America, which is considered Matriarchal. The economic activity is similar to other indigenous areas where agriculture and fishing predominate. The women from the region travel to other parts of Mexico to trade in the local markets and are identified by their dress. To own and wear a huipil from Tehauntepec is a very special way of recognizing a uniquely proud female society and strong culture.
